Chinese Tourism: Our Biggest Export Opportunity
The Trump administration is promising to address the trade imbalance with China. The most pain free solution, which would be welcomed by both countries, is the expansion of Chinese tourists visiting the U.S. According to the US. Travel Association the Chinese visitor to the U.S. spends, on average, $6,000. Thus every one million Chinese tourists visiting the U.S. create a $6 billion dollar export advantage for the U.S.
In 2004, the year Congress mandated an in person interview with a U.S. Consular officer for all non-immigrant visa applicants, fewer than 29 million Chinese tourists traveled outside of Mainland China. In 2016 the number increased by over 400 percent to 125 million. Over 200 million Chinese are forecasted to travel internationally by 2020.
